Perspective: Web Design & Web Development
Everyone one has a separate view on any given subject that passes before them. Web desgin and web development is an example of a subject that has so many meanings to so many different people, yet we all share a common bound with web design. That bound is that we know the term web design exists, and most of us have used the term web design in a sentence. Let's take a closer look at some common and not so common perspectives on web design
The life and times of a freelance web designer might not always be easy, but it sure is alot of fun. Not many careers offer you the artistic and creative freedom within graphic design, css, and web design. Even fewer careers can nicely complement the expressive web design with a formal and logical manipulation of data via the developmnet of web applications via coding and database administration.
To many those that view the the lifestyle of a web designer, the tech terms within web design and web development sound strangely confusing, almost a foreign language. HTML? CSS? Database? Object Oriented Programming Language? ASP.NET?. Why must web designer and web developers use such foreign terminology, can't they just simplify what they are trying to say?
The famiily life and social life of a web designer is difficult to understand for those living with and around a web designer. The difficulty seems to become of relative ease when simple phrases like "right" or "yes I understand" are used in response to the web designers terminology of his web design escapades. To do anything other then this may cause a reaction of an in-depth lecture of the difference between decimals and binary, as well as their relevance to a web application and/or web design.
To the neighbors and surrounding community, people wonder what it takes to become such an introvert as to spend most of ones time, looking at a computer screen tapping fingers and manipulating objects with a focus of cross-browser legacy supported web design and devlopment. I mean can't a web designer step away for a drink of water, or a snack?
To a web designer, it might so be that we have found a higher way of communications, or maybe we have decided that normal communications of the normal folks lack if only slightly, and the imaginative power offered within a web design ajax script offers much more pleasure then a lifeless technically inccorect conversation about something not relevant to web design.
To the salesman or head hunter web design is a term that may not be used lightly, when speaking to a perspective client you must first understand such clients understanding of such term web design. If a perspective client understands the term web design on a high level, then as a sales person you must refrain from using any technical terms relevant to web design. You must revert to a very basic line of communication, such as "right" or "yes I understand". When speaking with a perspective client who has no technical knowledge of web design, it is best to use descriptive, positve adjectives within a sentence that uses web design. Some examples are: "a beautiful web design layout" or "web desgin based on industry standards" or "a web desginer with 20 years experience"
From the perspective of the person living in poverty "web design" holds may hold a negative condentation. Someone living in poverty may not be able to afford a computer and the term web design is not something they care to think about as they may not be able to afford to eat let alone purchase something technical. The term web design may also hold a positve condentation to a person in poverty, as they may see the local library as a source to sit at a computer and read books on web design in the hopes they may learn much and maybe make a career out of the web design indusrty.
For someone that may have sight impairment or a mobility impairment, web design might strike thoughts of discrimination as so many companies use web design methods that are not Section 508, or WAI accessible. Companies might use a "pretty flashy web designer" as oppossed to a technically savy web desginer, which means their screen reader has no idea what is within the browser.
For an attorney the term "web design" holds a level of stress as their are so many unknowns and not many laws covering what a web design company can or cannot due. A mechanic could not charge $1,500 for a battery install, and criminal charges could be brought for doing as such. Offer the the web design equivalent of a $1,500 car battery and you just recieved a bill for $3,500 for outsourcing when the company across town would have done higher quality work for $495.
For the search engine browsing the web, they may read the data offered within the source html code of this mikestratton.net and think to itself "wow this must be imporant they use the term web design alot". A person may then search for web design as they need a website, and the Web Design by MikeStratton.net page may show up. They may click on the web design link, yet pay limited attention to this article, as most searching for web design on the internet are more concerned with "the pretty colorful web design" portion of a website, and not the text.
For web designer Mike Stratton, his perspective on web design has been all of the above in some form or fashion within his life. |
